Every summer, especially between December and February, industrial plants in Chile must make specific adjustments to maintain operational efficiency in the face of high temperatures that affect power, machinery, and production processes. Heat directly impacts electric motors, variable frequency drives, electrical panels, industrial pumps, hydraulic systems, fans, conveyors, sensors, PLCs, and other critical components whose stability is key to preventing unexpected downtime.
One of the most common adjustments is to improve industrial ventilation by enhancing airflow in cabinets, control panels, power equipment, transformers, medium-voltage cables, and systems prone to overheating. To achieve this, plants increase the capacity of exhaust fans, add additional fans, replace filters, adjust belts, clean pulleys, and inspect bearings that are affected by heat.
Mechanical systems also require adjustments: summer demands increased lubrication and replacement of industrial oils, greases, seals, pressure hoses, couplings, gears, metal parts, and moving components that wear out faster at temperatures above 30°C. Plants in Santiago and industrial regions typically perform preventive replacements to ensure operational continuity.
In the electrical field, December is the month when fuses, circuit breakers, contactors, relays, thermal sensors, and electrical transfer panels are replaced most frequently. The load increases due to the greater use of HVAC systems, refrigeration equipment, pumps, compressors, and high-power machinery.
It is also common to adjust PLC programming, optimise operating times, redistribute loads across generator sets, improve generator synchronisation, reinforce UPS systems, inspect batteries, and ensure that the entire system has sufficient backup capacity to handle demand spikes.
During the hot season, operational efficiency depends not only on maintenance but also on a preventive approach. Plants that adjust spare parts, lubrication, ventilation, and electrical programming are able to maintain continuous production, prevent failures, and weather the Chilean industrial summer without costly shutdowns.
