One of the World’s Largest Producers of Construction Screws Adds Another VisionLab 3D Gauging System

One of the world’s largest screw manufacturers added another VisionLab-150 3D Fastener Gauging System from General Inspection, LLC. VisionLab’s are used to streamline first part inspections, the Illinois-based company utilises the VisionLab-150 for greater accuracy and significant time savings.

VisionLab-150 3D Fastener Gauging System

VisionLab uses Gi’s patented 3D gauging technology to provide complete part dimensional inspection in less than 5 seconds. The machine can perform 360⁰ dimensional inspection with detailed data reporting, plus options to provide 360⁰ visual defect detection, end view inspection, and measure recess depth and recess concentricity. For screws the VisionLab has a high/low thread measuring algorithm as part of the 3D fastener gauging systems’ most comprehensive thread measurement capabilities. This includes all pertinent system-22 requirements, lobular shaped threads as well as algorithms for screw threads and high/low threads.

In addition to thread measurements, VisionLab measures straightness and other GD&T characteristics. Optional End-View measures and detects visual defects on both ends of parts including features such as recesses, inner/outer diameters, through holes and counterbores. Optional surface control is used to detect visual defects, such as bad plating, thread patch presence/quality, as well as measuring knurl width, gap, and height. Optional slewing optics automatically tilt for an enhanced view of the threads to measure root radius. Optional upper tooling and bit kit are available for parts with a recess drive.

The screw manufacturer’s goal was to reduce inspection time, improve quality, and cut down on calibration costs by replacing multiple manual gauges, such as micrometers, calipers, and optical comparators. Visionlab completes first-piece inspections in a fraction of the time allowing employees to concentrate on production tasks instead of measuring parts.

Production has significantly increased; errors have been eliminated and the company is able to measure with greater frequency. All dimensions including screw threads, hi/low threads, lengths, diameters, radii, angles, and GD&T features are measured and displayed with a pass/fail indication. Custom data reports are created and saved as CSV or Excel files. This saves time and money plus drastically improves quality by accurately measuring parts within two microns. Part feature tolerances are assigned with the appropriate part number and stored in memory for quick recall.

The VisionLab system is a versatile, accurate and fast inspection machine capable of handling a wide range of applications. For time savings, traceability and removing human error, VisionLab creates customised, complete reports with graphs and data charts which can also be uploaded to 3rd party SPC packages.
