The Spanish Bearing Manufacturer, Committed to Sustainability to Fight Climate Change — FERSA

Through the launch of its Fersa Green initiative and the development of next-generation, low-friction products, Fersa demonstrates that sustainability is not just a responsibility, but a catalyst for growth and industry-wide transformation.

In a global context marked by the urgency of mitigating climate change and transitioning toward a sustainable economy, businesses play a key role in implementing innovative and responsible solutions. The industrial sector in particular faces the challenge of reducing its environmental impact while maintaining competitiveness.

In this scenario, Fersa, the Spanish multinational specialising in the design, distribution, and manufacturing of high-performance bearings, adopts a comprehensive approach to sustainability, demonstrating that environmental commitment can drive growth and innovation.

A strong commitment to sustainability

At Fersa, sustainability is not simply a goal but one of the key drivers of increasingly responsible innovation. This vision is rooted in shared growth, responsibility, and foresight. Esther Muñoz, Fersa’s Compliance and ESG Responsible, states that:

“Economic sustainability is essential to ensure our company’s long-term stability and success. However, it is equally important that this success positively impacts the environment and the communities where we operate.”

Fersa’s journey towards sustainability began with the measurement of its corporate carbon footprint to understand and manage emissions associated with its operations. This initial step has enabled the company to implement effective strategies to reduce its overall environmental impact.

As part of its ongoing commitment, Fersa plans to expand its focus in 2025 by measuring the carbon footprint of its products. This will provide a more comprehensive view of the emissions associated with the entire lifecycle of its products, further strengthening efforts to minimise environmental impact.

Fersa Green: The initiative that makes a difference

Fersa has set ambitious goals to achieve net-zero emissions for scopes 1 and 2 by 2030 and for scope 3 by 2040. To this end, the company launched the Fersa Green program, which embodies the sustainability approach guiding its overall strategy. This program operates as an interconnected ecosystem, where every action and strategy are designed to reduce environmental impact and foster a more sustainable community.

This ecosystem is based on two main pillars: decarbonisation and the green community. Together, these pillars drive a profound transformation in the company’s operational processes and its relationships with society and the natural environment. Through this approach, Fersa positions itself as a key player in the transition to a more sustainable economy.

One example of this is the company’s active collaboration with employees, partners, and the wider community to ensure that sustainability remains a core value guiding its growth and operations responsibly and respectfully toward the planet.

Actions with a future perspective

The strategies Fersa is implementing to advance its decarbonisation journey includes resource optimisation through eco-design and process efficiency to minimise the use of natural resources, as well as promoting the circular economy by reusing materials and recycling products at the end of their lifecycle. These efforts aim to transition towards more sustainable and regenerative production models.

Additionally, Fersa seeks to create a positive impact beyond its operations by promoting cleaner and more eco-friendly solutions. This includes developing products for the electric vehicle market, such as the Drive Unit Repair Kit from its PFI FERSA brand, and its Fuel Efficient range for commercial vehicles.

Next-generation products

One of the company’s key launches in late 2024 was the Fuel Efficient Wheel Hub Assembly, which has demonstrated through various tests and studies a friction reduction of up to 50% and a fuel consumption saving of up to 7.3%.

This hub is the result of years of research and development in low-friction technology, aimed at minimising energy loss due to friction — a significant factor in vehicle fuel consumption.

By reducing fuel consumption, Fersa helps transport fleets decrease CO2 emissions by up to 5.40 tons for every 150,000 kilometres travelled, equivalent to planting 180 trees, thereby significantly reducing their environmental impact.

Fersa demonstrates that sustainability is not only a responsibility but also an opportunity to lead change in the industry. Through initiatives like Fersa Green and the development of more efficient products, the company reaffirms its commitment to a cleaner and healthier future and moves toward a more environmentally respectful economic model.
